Leica M3 Dummy (attrape)
Leica · Germany · 1954–1966 (12 years) · 135 film
Produced from 1954 to 1966, the Leica M3 Dummy (attrape) is a non-functional replica model of the groundbreaking Leica M3 rangefinder camera. Designed as a training aid or display piece, it physically mimics the appearance and controls of the actual M3 but lacks a functional film compartment, shutter, lens mount, or internal mechanisms. Its primary purpose was likely to allow camera technicians, retailers, or students to familiarize themselves with the M3's external layout, shutter speed dial, film rewind crank, and rangefinder window without the risk or expense of using a genuine, valuable M3. While sharing the iconic M3 aesthetic, including the distinctive rectangular rangefinder window and combined viewfinder/rangefinder, the dummy serves purely as a static, tactile demonstrator rather than a photographic instrument.
