Leica M4-P
Leica · Germany · 1981–1987 (6 years) · 135 film
The Leica M4-P represents a significant evolution in Leica's celebrated M-series rangefinder line, produced from 1981 to 1987. Building directly upon the foundation of the earlier M4, the M4-P introduced a crucial practical enhancement: a pair of bright-line viewfinders located within the main viewfinder window. This "framing selector" allowed photographers to instantly switch between framing lines for 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 90mm lenses simply by rotating a dial on the camera base. This innovation eliminated the need to remove and reattach auxiliary viewfinders for wider or longer lenses, greatly speeding up composition and workflow for photographers frequently changing focal lengths, particularly photojournalists and reportage shooters. It maintained the M4's classic features: a quiet cloth focal-plane shutter, the excellent and bright rangefinder coupled to all M-lenses, and a rugged, all-metal construction typical of Leica M cameras at the time. While not the most revolutionary Leica model, the M4-P became renowned as a reliable, fast-handling, and highly durable workhorse, embodying the essence of Leica's commitment to professional-grade mechanical rangefinder photography.
As a refinement of the M4, the M4-P solidified the M-system's position as the tool of choice for discerning professionals and serious enthusiasts who valued discretion, reliability, and optical excellence in a compact package. Its introduction of the integrated viewfinder selector addressed a key usability pain point of its predecessors without altering the core mechanical or optical philosophy. Production volumes were higher than many previous Leica M models, making it relatively accessible compared to rarer variants yet maintaining the brand's exacting standards. The M4-P is fondly remembered for its robustness and refined ergonomics, serving as a bridge between the earlier M-system classics and the later, more automated M6. It remains a highly respected example of Leica's mechanical rangefinder design philosophy, valued for its simplicity, durability, and practical enhancements.
