Canon L1 black
Canon · Japan · 1956–1957 (1 years) · 135 film
The Canon L1 black represents Canon's early foray into the 35mm single-lens reflex market during 1956-1957. As part of Canon's first dedicated SLR series, it utilized the common Leica screw mount (M39) but featured a fixed pentaprism viewfinder for eye-level viewing, a significant step up from earlier waist-level finders on many contemporary models. The camera body was constructed from stamped steel and covered in black enamel, a standard build for its era. While basic in its feature set compared to later models, the L1 provided reliable manual operation with shutter speeds ranging from 1 second to 1/500th, and offered Canon's proprietary R-mount lenses, marking a crucial development phase for the company in establishing its presence in the serious amateur SLR market.
