Olympus OM-PC
Olympus · Japan · 1985 · 135 film
The Olympus OM-PC, introduced in 1985, represented Olympus's significant but cautious entry into the competitive 35mm autofocus SLR market. Building upon the legendary OM system known for its compact design and exceptional optics, the OM-PC incorporated a primitive hybrid autofocus system driven by a motor within the camera body, engaging through gears on modified OM Zuiko lenses. While not as technologically advanced or elegant as contemporary electronic autofocus systems from competitors, it maintained the OM system's core virtues: a lightweight, ergonomic body with excellent handling and access to Olympus's renowned lens range. Its introduction marked a pivotal, albeit transitional, moment for Olympus as they adapted to industry trends without abandoning their successful manual heritage. Primarily aimed at the advanced amateur segment, it offered reliable auto-focus performance alongside manual override, appealing to OM users modernizing their kit. However, its complex mechanical coupling for autofocus and reliance on specific motorized lenses limited its long-term viability compared to fully electronic systems, contributing to its relatively brief production run.
