Olympus OM-707 AF
Olympus · Japan · 1986–1991 (5 years) · 135 film
The Olympus OM-707 AF marked a significant departure for the renowned OM system, representing Olympus's first venture into autofocus technology for its 35mm SLR line, introduced in 1986. Retaining the core philosophy of compact size and precision engineering characteristic of manual-focus OM bodies, the OM-707 integrated a phase-detection autofocus system compatible with the extensive OM Zuiko lens range. It featured aperture-priority automatic exposure with a center-weighted meter, shutter speeds from 1/1000s down to bulb, and a built-in motor drive for film advance. While not pioneering the concept itself, it was a competent and practical autofocus SLR from a respected manufacturer, aimed at photographers already invested in or seeking the benefits of the OM system's optical quality and handling, during a period when rapidly evolving autofocus technology was fundamentally changing the market landscape. Its production spanned five years, indicating a solid but not extraordinary performance in a highly competitive field.
