Leica IIf (black dial)
Leica · Germany
The Leica IIf (black dial) represents a significant refinement within Leica's classic screw-mount rangefinder lineage. It belongs to the Leica III series evolution, succeeding the IIIc and preceding the IIIf and IIIf Red Dial. Characterized by its distinctive black dial surrounding the top plate controls (as opposed to the earlier silver dial), it incorporated several practical improvements. Notably, it featured an improved self-timer mechanism integrated with the rewind knob, a more secure bayonet lens mount latch, and refined flash synchronization options, including both X and M synchronization contacts on the front plate. The core Leica ethos remained: a compact, all-metal body, coupled with a sharp rangefinder and coupled viewfinder system, utilizing the excellent Leica screw-mount lenses.
This camera was a workhorse designed for serious photographers during the post-WWII era, embodying the robustness and precision Leica was known for. While not possessing the groundbreaking status of the Leica M3 or the immediate predecessor the IIIf Red Dial (which introduced rangefinder coupling to 50mm frames), the IIf refined existing features for greater reliability and ease of use. Its build quality was exceptional, utilizing machined brass and leatherette coverings typical of Leica's high standards. It represents a crucial step in the development of the 35mm rangefinder camera, bridging the gap between pre-war designs and the later M-system innovations. The black dial version adds a subtle visual distinction for collectors.
