FED-2 (Type d)

FED · Ukraine

The FED-2 (Type d) represents a later iteration within the long-running FED series of 35mm rangefinder cameras produced in the Soviet Union by the Kharkov Factory of Exact Machinery (FED). Like its predecessors, it was a direct adaptation and simplification of the Leica II design, manufactured to meet domestic demand for an affordable photographic tool. Constructed primarily from steel and featuring a basic but functional rangefinder focusing system and cloth focal-plane shutter, the camera embodies the utilitarian manufacturing approach characteristic of mid-century Soviet industry. It lacks the sophisticated engineering or premium materials of contemporary Western equivalents, instead prioritizing robustness and cost-effectiveness for the mass market.
