FED (Type 1a)
FED · Ukraine
The FED (Type 1a) represents one of the earliest and most significant Soviet camera designs, produced by the FED factory in Kharkov. A direct derivative of the iconic Leica II (Model D), this camera emerged in the mid-1930s as part of Soviet industrial efforts to replicate foreign technology. It features a coupled rangefinder and separate viewfinder, a basic design focused on delivering essential 35mm functionality. Constructed largely from stamped steel and with simplified controls compared to its German inspiration, it was characterized by its robust, utilitarian build quality. The FED Type 1a was instrumental in making 35mm photography accessible within the Soviet Union, serving photographers, documentarians, and professionals for decades. Its production history reflects both the technological adoption and industrial capacity of the USSR during a pivotal period, establishing FED as a major Soviet camera manufacturer.
