Voigtlander Bessamatic M
Voigtlander · Germany
The Bessamatic M is a model within Voigtlander's Bessamatic series of 35mm single-lens reflex cameras, distinguished by its integration of a leaf shutter directly into the lens mount. This design innovation allowed flash synchronization at all shutter speeds—a notable advantage over contemporary focal-plane SLRs, which typically synchronized only at slow speeds. As part of Voigtlander's mid-20th century effort to compete in the 35mm SLR market, the camera featured interchangeable lenses with excellent optical quality, including the acclaimed Skopar and Color-Skopar primes, and operated on a simple yet reliable cloth shutter mechanism. Despite its advanced features for the era, the Bessamatic M struggled against the dominance of system cameras like the Nikon F, which offered broader lens ecosystems and faster focal-plane shutters, ultimately limiting its commercial success. It remains a testament to Voigtlander’s engineering focus, particularly among enthusiasts who value its unique leaf-shutter approach and compact build.
