Rolleiflex Automat I (Model 1)

Rollei · Germany · 1937–1939 (2 years) · 120 film

The Rolleiflex Automat I (Model 1), introduced by Rollei in 1937, marked a significant evolution in the iconic twin-lens reflex (TLR) camera format. Building upon the success of the earlier Rolleiflex Standard models, the Automat series introduced crucial automation. Its most defining innovation was the fully automatic film transport system, utilizing a large, easily operated crank on the right side of the camera body to wind the film to the next exposure and cock the shutter simultaneously, eliminating the need for separate winding knobs and improving operational speed and convenience. This automation, coupled with its signature waist-level finder offering a laterally reversed but bright image, set a new standard for medium format TLRs, streamlining the photographic workflow for professional and serious amateur photographers. The camera maintained Rolleiflex's reputation for robust construction, featuring a pressed metal body, coupled lenses, and a reliable focal-plane shutter.

Produced until 1939, the Automat I embodied the classic Rolleiflex design philosophy. Its coupled taking and viewing lenses provided excellent viewing clarity and accurate parallax correction for close focusing, a significant improvement over earlier systems. The format, using readily available 120 roll film, delivered 6x6 cm square negatives, offering exceptional image quality for its time. While not the absolute rarest Rollei model, its introduction period just before World War II and its role as the first in the landmark Automat lineage cement its place as a historically significant TLR. It was a preferred tool for documentary and portrait photographers seeking precision and reliability, influencing camera design for decades. Its combination of automation, robust build, and excellent optical performance defined the professional TLR experience during the late 1930s.
