Canon TLb
Canon · Japan · 1974–1976 (2 years) · 135 film
The Canon TLb was a practical, entry-level 35mm single-lens reflex camera launched in 1974, positioned as a more affordable alternative to the highly regarded Canon FTb for export markets. Sharing the robust Canon FD lens mount, it offered compatibility with the modern FD lenses in full-aperture metering mode and earlier FL lenses in stop-down mode. Designed for simplicity and value, the TLb featured a cloth focal-plane shutter with speeds typically ranging from 1 second to 1/500th second (plus B), and a basic through-the-lens CdS exposure meter, likely lacking the FTb's match-needle system. Its core appeal lay in providing reliable manual focus SLR functionality at a lower price point, making 35mm photography accessible to a wider audience, particularly those in cost-conscious regions alongside its stablemates like the TX. While mechanically less sophisticated than its FTb sibling, it maintained Canon's reputation for solid construction and user-friendly operation within the consumer segment.
