Olympus OM-2 SP
Olympus · Japan
The Olympus OM-2 SP is a significant 35mm film SLR camera representing the pinnacle of Olympus's OM (Olympus Miniature) system development. Building upon the success of the original OM-1 and OM-2, the OM-2 SP introduced advanced metering and exposure control features highly valued by professionals and serious enthusiasts. Its core innovation was the sophisticated, multi-pattern center-weighted and spot metering system, offering precise exposure control crucial for demanding shooting conditions like studio work or complex lighting. This metering, combined with its reliable mechanical shutter capable of flash synchronization at all speeds (including the use of non-dedicated flash units in auto mode), set it apart from contemporaries. The camera maintained the OM series hallmark of exceptional compactness and relatively lightweight construction compared to bulkier professional SLRs, without compromising on build quality or operational feel. It gained popularity among photojournalists, nature photographers, and studio assistants who needed a robust, portable, and versatile camera system. While not achieving the mythical status of some landmark models, the OM-2 SP was widely regarded as a workhorse embodying the practical excellence and engineering refinement Olympus was known for in the 1980s and early 1990s.
