Berning Robot Robot Star (brown leather)
Berning Robot · Germany · 1952–1959 (7 years) · 135 film
The Robot Star (brown leather) represents a specialized German engineering approach to 35mm photography, produced by Berning Robot between 1952 and 1959. Building upon the distinctive Robot series heritage, the Star model continued the brand's signature rotary focal-plane shutter system, enabling exceptionally high flash synchronization speeds across its entire shutter speed range. This, combined with its unique horizontal format 24x24mm image frame (capturing 12 exposures on standard 35mm film), made it particularly suited for technical, surveillance, and industrial applications where rapid flash freezing of motion was critical. Constructed largely from metal with a distinctive brown leather covering, it presented a utilitarian yet robust aesthetic, embodying the post-war precision manufacturing ethos.
While never achieving the mass-market appeal of contemporary 35mm SLRs like the Exakta, or the prestige of Leica, the Robot Star carved out a significant niche. Its rapid flash sync and quiet operation were valued by photojournalists in certain situations and by professionals requiring precise flash timing, such as in scientific and industrial documentation. The Star refined the Robot formula, offering reliable mechanical performance within its specialized parameters. It stands as a testament to an alternative design philosophy in the 35mm era, focusing on specific technical advantages rather than the more common SLR or rangefinder pathways, holding a respected place in the history of innovative camera design.
