Mamiya Prismat NP
Mamiya · Japan · 1961
The Mamiya Prismat NP introduced in 1961 represents a point in Mamiya's evolution beyond its established reputation in medium format roll film cameras. Designed as a 35mm SLR, the Prismat NP joined Mamiya's efforts to capture the burgeoning consumer SLR market, competing with established players from brands like Canon, Nikon, and Minolta. It featured Mamiya's proprietary M42 screw lens mount, allowing compatibility with a wide range of lenses, and incorporated a leaf shutter system, distinguishing it from the focal plane shutters common in contemporary SLRs. This design choice aimed for quieter operation and potentially better synchronization with electronic flash. The camera body typically housed a coupled selenium light meter visible in the viewfinder, aiding exposure accuracy for photographers moving from simpler viewfinder models. While incorporating standard SLR features for its time, such as a pentaprism viewfinder and instant return mirror, the Prismat NP emphasized reliable function and Mamiya's characteristic solid construction in a more accessible package than their professional medium format gear.
