Zeiss Contarex Super (10.2600) (black)
Zeiss · Germany · 1968–1972 (4 years) · 135 film
The Contarex Super (10.2600), produced by Zeiss Ikon in black from 1968 to 1972, represents the pinnacle of Zeiss's ambitious 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) line, continuing the legacy of the original Contarex Bullseye. As the flagship model, it embodied Zeiss's commitment to precision engineering and optical excellence, featuring a robust, all-metal construction and a distinctive, functional design. Key innovations included the unique interchangeable film magazine system, allowing quick film changes without wasting frames, and a sophisticated through-the-lens exposure meter coupled with the Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 or Tessar 50mm f/2.8 lenses renowned for their sharpness. Its precision leaf shutter, allowing flash synchronization at all speeds, set it apart from most contemporary focal-plane shutter SLRs. While complex and relatively expensive compared to competitors like the Nikon F, the Contarex Super appealed to discerning photographers and professionals valuing its build quality, mechanical reliability, and the superb Zeiss glass. Though production ended relatively early due to market pressures, it remains a landmark of West German camera manufacturing.
