Olympus Pen EE-2
Olympus · Japan
The Olympus Pen EE-2 is a compact, fixed-lens, 35mm film camera notable for its simplicity and half-frame format. Introduced in the late 1960s or early 1970s as part of Olympus's successful Pen series, it represents a significant push towards making photography more accessible to the general public. The camera operates with a selenium light meter coupled to a simple automatic aperture-priority system, eliminating the need for complex exposure settings and focusing from the user. Its defining characteristic is the half-frame design, exposing a 24x18mm image on standard 35mm film, effectively doubling the number of exposures per roll (typically 72) compared to full-frame cameras. This made the Pen EE-2 economical and lightweight, fitting the "Pen" ethos of a compact, unobtrusive camera ideal for everyday snapshots and travel. While not technologically groundbreaking, its combination of affordability, ease of use, and the practical advantage of half-frame shooting cemented its popularity as a reliable point-and-shoot camera during its production run.
