Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic
Kodak · USA · 1915–1926 (11 years) · 135 film
The Vest Pocket Autographic Kodak, produced from 1915 to 1926, holds a significant place in camera history as a key pioneer of compact, amateur-targeted 35mm photography. Building on the success of the earlier Autographic series, it was specifically designed to fit in a vest pocket, a revolutionary size reduction for the era that dramatically increased camera portability and accessibility. Its primary innovation was the "Autographic" feature: a small door on the back allowed users to write directly onto the film backing paper using a metal stylus (provided), enabling the addition of captions or dates directly onto the negative strip. This camera initially used 127 film, but a later model (around 1919) adapted it for 135 format film (35mm), cementing its role in the evolution of the most popular film format. Constructed with a simple, lightweight metal body covered in leather, it featured a simple rotary shutter and fixed-focus lens, designed purely for ease of use and affordability, not professional results.
