Rolleicord V
Rollei · Germany
The Rolleicord V represents Rollei's effort to make high-quality medium format photography accessible to a broader market during the mid-20th century. As a variant of the iconic Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex (TLR) camera, it retained the core design principles: two lenses for viewing and exposure, a waist-level finder, and a built-in reflex viewing system. However, it distinguished itself through simplifications, such as fixed focal length lenses (often a triplet Tessar-type or similar), less complex shutters, and fewer features compared to the Rolleiflex models, making it a more budget-friendly option for enthusiasts and serious amateurs. This approach democratized the sharp 6x6 cm negative format, previously the domain of more expensive equipment.
The camera's construction utilized metal bodies, primarily Bakelite and aluminum, ensuring robustness characteristic of Rollei's mid-range offerings. While built to last, the materials and simpler mechanisms reflected its position as an entry-level Rollei. Its straightforward operation and reliable performance, combined with Rollei's reputation for quality optics (even in the Cord line), made it a popular workhorse for decades. It played a significant role in the hands of countless photographers seeking a portable, high-quality alternative to larger view cameras without the cost of the flagship Rolleiflex, solidifying the TLR format's appeal beyond professionals.
