Leica M6 'Jaguar XK'
Leica · Germany · 1998 · 135 film
Introduced in 1998 as a special edition variant, the Leica M6 'Jaguar XK' leveraged the established M6 platform, a highly regarded 35mm rangefinder camera known for its robust all-mechanical operation and precision engineering. This collaboration celebrated Jaguar's 75th anniversary, featuring unique cosmetic elements like a two-tone paint scheme – typically chrome and black or specialized finishes – and subtle Jaguar branding integrated into the top plate or engravings. Functionally, it remained identical to the standard M6 'Classic' models produced during that era, embodying Leica's commitment to mechanical reliability with an uncoupled cloth focal-plane shutter, a coupled rangefinder and viewfinder for accurate 35mm lens focusing, and an internal light meter (powered by a 9V battery) providing needle match exposure guidance in the viewfinder. It offered the same exceptional tactile experience and handling characteristics inherent to the M series.
While the core M6 platform was significant for being Leica's last purely mechanical M-body before the introduction of the M7 (1999) and celebrated for its robustness and widespread professional use, the Jaguar XK edition itself represents a specialized, collector-oriented collaboration rather than a landmark innovation. Its primary distinction lies in its limited production run and unique aesthetic appeal, targeted at Jaguar enthusiasts and discerning Leica collectors seeking a distinctive version of the revered M6. It stands as a testament to Leica's ability to create desirable special editions without altering the fundamental, time-proven design of their flagship rangefinder camera.
