Konica Auto S3
Konica · Japan
The Konica Auto S3 is a 35mm rangefinder camera introduced in 1967, representing a refinement of Konica's compact, user-focused line. Building on the earlier Auto S2, it features a coupled rangefinder for precise focusing and a shutter-priority automatic exposure system, which simplified operation by allowing users to select the shutter speed while the camera automatically adjusts the aperture. This automation was innovative for its time, making it accessible to enthusiasts and semi-professionals. The camera is housed in a lightweight but sturdy metal body, often finished in black enamel, and paired with a sharp Hexanon 48mm f/1.8 lens that delivers excellent image quality. While not groundbreaking like Konica's earlier SLR innovations, the Auto S3 was a practical and well-regarded camera that balanced portability, reliability, and advanced features for its era.
Designed as an evolution of Konica's successful rangefinder series, the Auto S3 appealed to photographers seeking automation without bulk. It incorporates a bright viewfinder, parallax correction, and a reliable Copal leaf shutter. Though overshadowed in the market by contemporaries like the Canonet QL17, the Auto S3 remains notable for Konica's engineering refinements and remains functional and collectible today as a snapshot of mid-20th-century Japanese camera design.
