Rolleiflex 2.8 FX
Rollei · Germany
The Rolleiflex 2.8 FX represents a later iteration of Rollei's renowned twin-lens reflex (TLR) system, building upon the legacy established by models like the Rolleiflex 2.8F. It retains the core TLR design principle: a viewing lens and a taking lens of identical focal length and aperture, connected by a mirror system that provides a waist-level viewfinder image that appears correctly oriented. The "2.8" designation specifically denotes a maximum aperture of f/2.8 for the taking lens, a characteristic feature of Rollei's higher-end Rolleiflex models, distinguishing them from the slower f/3.5 versions. This relatively fast aperture, combined with Rollei's traditionally excellent Carl Zeiss or Schneider Kreuznach lenses, made it capable of capturing images with good subject separation and performance in lower light conditions, appealing to professional photographers and serious amateurs. Built like a precision instrument, the FX model continued Rollei's reputation for robust, all-metal construction and meticulous German engineering, ensuring durability and smooth operation throughout its service life. While it introduced incremental refinements over predecessors, its fundamental significance lies in its embodiment of the classic Rolleiflex formula: a portable medium format camera offering exceptional image quality through a unique and ergonomic design.
