Leica II (Mod D) (early I A upgraded, calfskin)
Leica · Germany · 1932–1948 (16 years) · 135 film
The Leica II (Mod D), representing an early Leica I A model upgraded with the addition of a coupled rangefinder, occupies a pivotal position in the evolution of 35mm photography. Produced from 1932 until 1948, this model marked the crucial transition from the revolutionary but difficult-to-focus Leica I series to the more versatile and practical rangefinder Leicas that followed. Its most significant innovation was the integration of the coupled rangefinder system, which directly linked the viewfinder image to the lens focusing mechanism. This eliminated the guesswork required with the earlier split-image or ground-glass focusing systems, dramatically improving focusing accuracy and speed for handheld photography. This technological leap was fundamental in establishing the Leica as the premier tool for candid, fast-action, and documentary photography during the 1930s and 1940s.
The camera retained the compact, robust body characteristic of the Leica I, but the added complexity of the rangefinder necessitated a slightly revised top plate design with separate viewfinder and rangefinder windows. It continued to utilize the excellent 50mm Elmar lenses, known for their sharpness and compactness. The calfskin covering mentioned on this specific example highlights the premium build quality and tactile refinement Leica embodied, making it not just a tool but a desirable object. Famous photojournalists and documentarians like Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and countless others embraced the Leica II (Mod D) and its descendants precisely because of its reliability, portability, and the newfound focusing precision it provided. Its use in capturing historical events and shaping the visual language of the 20th century cemented its iconic status, bridging the gap between the pioneering Leica I and the sophisticated post-war models like the III series and eventually the M3.
