Kiev 19 M
Kiev · Ukraine · 1985–1990 (5 years) · 135 film
The Kiev 19 M is a Soviet-manufactured 35mm SLR camera produced between 1985 and 1990, part of Kiev's long-running line of budget-oriented single-lens reflex cameras derived from earlier Zeiss Contax designs. It represents the continuation of Soviet camera production focused on providing affordable, functional photographic equipment to the domestic market and Eastern bloc consumers, rather than competing with high-end Western models. As a manual SLR, it typically features shutter speeds from 1s to 1/1000s, a cloth focal-plane shutter, through-the-lens (TTL) metering for center-weighted exposure control, and accepts Kiev's standard mount lenses, often copies of Zeiss designs or Soviet optics. Its build is characteristic of Soviet practicality: functional but utilitarian, prioritizing mechanical operation and affordability over refined finish or precision engineering tolerances common in premium cameras.
