Nikon F2
Nikon · Japan · 1971–1980 (9 years) · 135 film
The Nikon F2 stands as a pinnacle of mechanical camera engineering, representing the apex of professional 35mm SLR design during the 1970s. Following the success of the original Nikon F, the F2 was developed as a more robust and versatile professional tool with a modular design philosophy. Manufactured by Nippon Kogaku K (Nikon) between 1971 and 1980, the camera featured an entirely new titanium-blade focal-plane shutter capable of 1/2000 second speeds, setting new standards for SLR performance. The F2's modular system allowed photographers to interchange viewfinders, focusing screens, and motor drives, making it an exceptionally adaptable tool for various photographic applications from studio work to photojournalism.
Technically, the F2 incorporated Nikon's renowned bayonet lens mount, ensuring precision and compatibility with a growing range of professional optics. The camera employed a titanium shutter that was tested to an impressive 150,000 cycles, contributing to its legendary durability. Various metering systems, including the rare Photomic finder with TTL center-weighted metering, could be attached to the camera body. This attention to technical excellence made the F2 the camera of choice for many photojournalists covering significant historical events during its production period, including the later years of the Vietnam War and political movements of the 1970s. Its reliability and performance in challenging conditions cemented Nikon's reputation for professional-grade equipment.
