Fujifilm Fujica ST-701

Fujifilm · Japan

The Fujica ST-701 was Fujifilm's first single-lens reflex (SLR) camera to incorporate through-the-lens (TTL) metering, a significant technological advancement for the brand upon its release in 1970. Positioned in the emerging consumer SLR market, it represented Fujifilm's serious entry into the 35mm SLR arena. The camera featured a unique metering system using a cell positioned behind the reflex mirror, requiring the mirror to be locked up during exposure metering – a distinct characteristic compared to later TTL systems. While not achieving the legendary status of contemporaries like the Nikon F or Pentax Spotmatic, it was a competent and popular camera for its time, offering reliable shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/1000th, a self-timer, and standard M42 screw mount lenses. Its design reflected the sturdy, functional aesthetics of early 1970s SLRs, prioritizing accessibility and usability for amateur photographers.
