Praktica MTL3
Praktica · Germany · 1978–1984 (6 years) · 135 film
The Praktica MTL3 is a 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) camera manufactured by VEB Pentacon in East Germany between 1978 and 1984. Representing a continuation of Praktica's long-standing tradition of producing accessible, mechanical SLRs for the mass market, the MTL3 embodies the utilitarian philosophy of the era. It features fully manual controls, including shutter speeds selected via a ring on the pentaprism housing and aperture adjustment on the lens, coupled with a match-needle TTL (through-the-lens) center-weighted light meter. Its construction is primarily steel and robust, typical of mid-20th-century Eastern European cameras, prioritizing durability and reliability over ergonomic refinement or advanced features common in contemporary Japanese models. Popular as an affordable introductory SLR for hobbyists and students in Europe and beyond, the MTL3 offered a straightforward, no-frills path to 35mm photography with decent image quality from its standard 42mm screw-mount lenses.
