The Salyut (Salut) was a 35mm rangefinder camera produced by the Arsenal factory in Kiev, Ukraine, from 1957 to 1972. Essentially a direct copy of the pre-war Zeiss Contax II, it shared the camera's distinctive angular shape, coupled rangefinder viewfinder, and interchangeable lens mount (M42 thread, though requiring a unique adapter for Contax lenses). Built to Soviet standards of the era, it featured a robust metal construction with a black leatherette covering, making it a durable workhorse despite its origins as an imitation. Targeted primarily at the domestic Soviet market and some Eastern Bloc countries, it offered photographers access to a controllable, 35mm camera system at a relatively affordable price point, filling a gap left by the scarcity of higher-end imported equipment. While technically derivative, it served as a reliable, functional tool for amateur and professional photographers within its operating environment.
