Leica M2 Midland (Canadian)
Leica · Germany · 1957–1967 (10 years) · 135 film
The M2 Midland (Canadian) was a variant of the Leica M2, produced by Leica specifically for the Canadian market between 1957 and 1967. It retained the core specifications of the standard Leica M2: a 35mm rangefinder camera accepting interchangeable Leica M-mount lenses, utilizing a coupled rangefinder focusing system, and offering a simplified viewfinder compared to the M3, lacking the 0.91x magnification option. Construction remained consistent with Leica's high standards, featuring a metal body, precise mechanics, and the reliability expected of the brand. Essentially, it was the M2 model adapted for sale in Canada, sharing its design philosophy and functionality without introducing distinct technological innovations.
This camera placed Leica's renowned rangefinder system within the reach of a broader audience in North America, offering a more accessible entry point into the Leica system than the premium M3. While historically significant as part of Leica's mid-century production and their presence in the Canadian market, the Midland variant itself did not represent a major leap forward in camera technology or design. It stands as a solid workhorse and an authentic representation of Leica's manufacturing capabilities during this period, valued for its place within the Leica M family and its Canadian provenance rather than for unique features.
