Leica M2 (chrome, button rewind, self-timer)
Leica · Germany · 1959 · 135 film
Introduced in 1959, the Leica M2 represented a significant strategic evolution for Leica. While the preceding M3 had established the modern Leica M rangefinder system with its groundbreaking viewfinder, its complexity and premium price point created a barrier for many photographers. The M2 addressed this by offering a more accessible alternative within the same M-mount platform. It retained the robust build quality and precision mechanics core to Leica rangefinders but simplified the viewfinder, initially featuring three brightlines (35mm, 50mm, 90mm) instead of the M3's complex rotating mask. Key practical features included a convenient bottom-mounted film rewind crank and a self-timer, making it a highly practical tool for reportage and travel photography. The M2 effectively democratized the Leica M experience, bringing the advantages of a compact, quiet, high-quality 35mm rangefinder to a broader audience of serious photographers.
The M2 quickly gained a reputation for reliability and became a workhorse for numerous photojournalists and documentary photographers throughout the 1960s and beyond. Its straightforward layout and dependable performance in diverse conditions made it a trusted companion for professionals like Elliott Erwitt and others who valued discretion and image quality. While less visually distinctive than the M3 and lacking its ultimate viewfinder magnification, the M2 solidified the Leica M system's dominance in the 35mm rangefinder market. Its production run was substantial, and it served as the direct foundation for subsequent models like the M3's successor, the M4, inheriting its essential chassis and core operational principles. The M2 is historically significant as the crucial "everyman's Leica M" that expanded the system's reach and cemented its reputation for exceptional engineering and photographic capability.
