Leica M7 0.72 chrome
Leica · Germany · 2002 · 135 film
The Leica M7 0.72 chrome, introduced in 2002, represents a significant evolution within Leica's venerable M-series rangefinder system. It uniquely blended the classic mechanical foundation and precision engineering long associated with Leica M cameras with modern electronic automation, aiming to broaden its appeal without compromising core values. Its 0.72x viewfinder was specifically chosen for optimal use with wider focal length lenses like 28mm and 35mm, offering a bright frame and parallax correction, while also featuring a sophisticated electronic shutter capable of speeds up to 1,000th of a second and DX coding support. This hybrid approach combined the reliability of a mechanical backup shutter (1-1/1000th sec) with the convenience of automated exposure modes, making it arguably the most versatile and user-friendly M camera produced at its launch.
While retaining the iconic M-series silhouette and robust, precision-milled brass construction finished in classic chrome, the M7 0.72 marked a crucial transitional moment. It offered Leica enthusiasts the familiar tactile experience and legendary M-mount compatibility while introducing automation to compete increasingly in a market moving towards digital dominance. Its production run was relatively short-lived before the subsequent M8 digital model, contributing to its status as a bridge model. It earned respect for its exceptional build quality, refined ergonomics, and the seamless integration of electronics without sacrificing the Leica essence, though it also sparked debate among purists about the path forward for the analog M-system.
