Kodak Folding Autographic Brownie No.2A
Kodak · USA
The Folding Autographic Brownie No.2A represents Kodak's enduring commitment to making photography accessible to the masses during the early 20th century. As an evolution of the immensely popular Brownie series, this folding camera simplified picture-taking for the non-professional, embodying the "snapshot" ideal. Its key innovation lay in the Kodak Autographic feature, introduced around 1915, which allowed users to write information directly onto a special paper lining the film door using a stylus, enabling notes to be exposed onto the negative margin. Constructed primarily from lightweight materials like pressed metal and leatherette, it featured a simple rotary shutter and meniscus lens, typical for its era and price point. Designed for 116 film, it produced negatives measuring 6.5 cm x 11 cm, making it a straightforward step up from earlier box Brownies for those wanting slightly larger images and the added utility of autographic notes. While lacking the technical sophistication of higher-end cameras of its time, the No.2A and its siblings were instrumental in embedding photography into everyday family life, solidifying Kodak's dominance in the amateur market before the rise of 35mm film.
