Nikon Nikkor F Photomic T
Nikon · Japan
The Nikon F Photomic T represents a pivotal iteration in the legendary Nikon F series, Nikon's first single-lens reflex camera that fundamentally shaped modern 35mm SLR photography. Introduced alongside the original Nikon F in 1959, the Photomic models integrated exposure meters directly into the camera prism housing, marking a significant leap in convenience and usability for professional and serious amateur photographers. The "T" suffix specifically denotes a Through-The-Lens (TTL) metering system, utilizing a CdS (Cadmium Sulfide) cell housed within the prism. This provided accurate light readings directly from the focusing screen, crucial for reliable exposure with Nikon's groundbreaking range of F-mount Nikkor lenses, renowned for their optical excellence and robust construction. The camera body itself was built like a tank, featuring a die-cast aluminum alloy chassis, cloth focal plane shutter with speeds from 1 to 1/1000 second plus B, and the innovative instant return mirror system. It became the undisputed workhorse for photojournalists, war correspondents, and documentary photographers throughout the 1960s, used by icons like David Douglas Duncan in conflict zones and NASA for space documentation, cementing the Nikon F system's reputation for reliability and image quality under demanding conditions. Its design and feature set became the blueprint against which subsequent professional SLRs were measured.
