Konica Hexar RF Limited
Konica · Japan · 2001 · 135 film
Introduced in 2001, the Hexar RF Limited was Konica's high-end entry into the competitive 35mm rangefinder camera market. It represented the Japanese manufacturer's ambitious bid to offer a modern alternative to established icons like Leica M cameras, featuring a unique autofocus system within a traditional rangefinder body. This innovation aimed to combine the precision and feel of a rangefinder with the convenience of autofocus, targeting photographers who desired both manual control and modern focusing aids. Constructed with a combination of metal and high-quality materials, it carried a premium feel despite its late arrival in an increasingly digital-dominated era.
The camera incorporated a 50mm f/2 Hexanon lens, renowned for its sharpness, and offered compatibility with M-mount lenses, expanding its flexibility. Key features included a quiet, electromagnetic cloth shutter and intuitive controls alongside the central rangefinder window coupled with the autofocus assist frames. While Konica had produced the well-regarded Hexar AF fixed-lens camera, the Hexar RF Limited was their distinct effort to enter the interchangeable lens rangefinder segment, though it arrived just as the market for film rangefinders was shrinking due to the digital revolution. Its legacy lies as a competent, technically interesting, but ultimately short-lived effort in a challenging space.
