Exakta Roll-Paff Reflex Luxus
Exakta · Germany · 1921–1927 (6 years) · 135 film
Produced by the German company Exakta between 1921 and 1927, the Roll-Paff Reflex Luxus holds a notable position as one of the very earliest attempts to create a practical, handheld 35mm camera. It utilized the standardized 35mm cine film, pioneered its format by loading the film into special cassettes, and featured a reflex viewing system, likely a waist-level finder, which was an innovative step for non-folding plate cameras of the era. While it arrived just a few years before the groundbreaking Leica I introduced the modern 35mm still camera format to the world, the Roll-Paff Luxus represents a significant experimental phase. Its design, incorporating a reflex mechanism and utilizing the 135 film format that would dominate photography, marks a crucial early development in the miniaturization of cameras and the shift away from bulky plate and sheet film formats. Despite its innovative aspects, the Roll-Paff Luxus did not achieve widespread commercial success or the iconic status of later Exakta models, operating more as a significant precursor within the history of 35mm photography.
